August was an ‘African’ month – which means we had our good times and also our not so great times!
• Birthdays in August: Joyce (9), Mahija (6), Eliza (12), Iddy (7)
• Mahija was given birthday money to have a party – we took her and our other 5-7 year olds to see Ice Age 2. For all but David it was their first time to go to a proper cinema, and they loved it! David ate too much popcorn and gave himself a stomach ache! Mahija bought a toy car and toy phone with her birthday money!
• Mariam received birthday money too, and bought some new clothes with her money!
• Our vegetable gardens continue to produce – right now we are harvesting aubergines, and also have plenty of spinach and other greens.
• We are now receiving meat free every week from the best butcher in town! This helps greatly with our budget.
• Elibariki came 5th in his mock exams for Standard Seven in primary school. The real exams are September 9th, and determine where he will be offered a secondary school place. He has been studying very hard (getting up early every day).
• Our UK visitor, Christine, returned home mid-August. The kids keep asking when she is coming back.
• It is the end of our winter. There is a lot of flu around right now – several of our kids and staff have succumbed, and we have shifted Elibariki to a flu-free house to make sure he stays fit for his important exams.
• Mama Joyce and SWTz parted company mid-August. We have interviewed many potential mamas to replace her and have shortlisted two – they are volunteering for a few days to see how they, staff and kids get on together. We hope to install a new mama soon – all day-staff have taken turns sleeping at Magorofani B to look after the kids there. The twins have been staying with Rebecca and Wendy so they have a consistent ‘mama’ every night.
• We are looking for a replacement music teacher as Huruma is no longer able to come. We will miss him greatly.
• There have been many challenges the past month, because of staffing issues and sickness. But we have seen our staff come together, and make sure everything is running smoothly and that the kids are looked after well. We are learning to deal with difficult situations as they arise and not panic.
